Chicken Anxiety

***Posted by Kyle

Never in my life did I think that I would have anxiety over a chicken. Now I realize it is possible. In previous posts, we have talked about how we try to support local farmers, and also eat as healthy of products as we can. Some weeks, we pre-order chickens from Greenwood farms, and go pick them up. Other weeks, we simply forget. Our normal solution to getting chickens that are healthy to eat when we forgot to order them was to go to Trader Joes, and pick up one of their "Free Range" chickens. However, through a little bit of research (and some notes from friends of mine who are passionately in-the-know), we discovered that these chickens aren't necessarily treated any more humanely than the ones owned by Purdue.

How can this be? I mean look at the people working at Trader Joes. They wear jeans, t-shirts, and have scraggly beards. They look very "granola". Surely they wouldn't sell food that was labelled "free range", but the chickens are all crammed into a warehouse and choking from the ammonia produced by their own feces! Did I get duped by the hippies? Evidently so.

Our search continues for locally available, truly "free range" chickens.
